Bring one change over, not a whole branch.
Cherry-pick applies the changes introduced by selected commits onto the current branch. It usually creates a new commit identity. It is not the same as moving the original branch.
git status
git switch TARGET_BRANCH
git cherry-pick COMMIT_SHATARGET_BRANCH and COMMIT_SHA are placeholders. Inspect the commit before applying it, and ensure the target working tree is clean. A fix may depend on earlier commits you did not select.
git show COMMIT_SHAIf cherry-pick pauses, edit the conflicted files, stage the resolution, then continue. Abort cancels the sequence. Skip intentionally omits the current commit; do not use it just to hide an unexplained error.
git add RESOLVED_FILE
git cherry-pick --continue
# Alternative, to cancel:
git cherry-pick --abortA successful application does not prove the application works. Run tests and review the result. Cherry-picking merge commits needs a deliberate mainline selection and is beyond this beginner recipe.
Does cherry-pick normally reuse the original commit identity?
Choose an answer.
Command blocks are syntax examples checked against official documentation, not fabricated terminal output. Replace uppercase placeholders with your actual names and inspect status before commands that change work.
