Git vs GitHub vs GitLab

The version-control tool and the hosting platforms are different.

Git is the version-control system

Git records snapshots and history, supports branches and merging, and works locally. You can commit without a GitHub or GitLab account. Hosting is not required for local version control.

git init
git add FILE
git commit -m "Describe the change"

GitHub hosts repositories and collaboration

GitHub adds hosted repositories, pull requests, reviews and other platform features around Git. Its account, access rules and web interface are not part of the git command itself.

GitLab is another Git-based platform

GitLab provides repository hosting and a software-development platform built around Git. Its collaboration workflow calls proposals merge requests. Hosting options and capabilities depend on the product and deployment.

Choose for the project, not the name

Check where the team already works, access requirements, review workflow and automation. Git skills transfer, but UI steps, permissions and platform-specific automation do not transfer unchanged. No price or feature-tier comparison is claimed here.

Quick check

Can you make a local Git commit without either hosting account?

Choose an answer.

Sources and scope

Command blocks are syntax examples checked against official documentation, not fabricated terminal output. Replace uppercase placeholders with your actual names and inspect status before commands that change work.
